White gold vs platinum

COLOR

wHITE GOLD

The natural color of gold is yellow. Yellow gold is alloyed with different “white colored” metals and then finished with rhodium for a bright white finish.

Platinum

Platinum is a pure, dense, natural white metal.

Visual comparison

You cannot tell a visual difference on new white gold and platinum jewelry. They will look the same. However, you will notice overtime that the rhodium wears off of white gold, leaving you with a yellowish-white color. Platinum will always look white.

durability

There is only a slight difference in durability between white gold and platinum. White gold is more durable than yellow gold, but not as durable as platinum. Platinum is extremely durable and more malleable, meaning it will be more likely to bend than break.

longevity

Think of your prongs like treads on a tire. Over time your tires will go bald. When your prongs are bald, you need to have them retipped (adding gold to secure your diamonds). With white gold, you want to get them retipped about every 6-10 years, platinum will be 10-15 years. Platinum trumps white gold in wear and tear.

PRICE

PLATINUM will always retail at a higher price than WHITE GOLD.
